(ORIGIN AND GROWTH)

 

      Department of Botany was started since the inception of institution in the year 1954. The college was admitted with grant in aid by G.O.M.S. No.308 Education, dated 18-02-1957 B.Sc. degree with C.B.Z. combination was started with one section in 1955. The department was first headed by Sri R.Appala Raju M.Sc. After brief period of Sri R. Appala Raju the department was headed by Sri K.Janaki Rao continuously for 31 years. In 1974 Botany main was introduced along with Zoology and Chemistry as ancillary subjects. But from 1990 Botany was introduced as common subjects for all CBZ students along with Chemistry and Zoology. Up to 1980 only one section was maintained in CBZ with strength of 72 students. From 1981 two sections are being maintained each with the strength of 72 students. At present one section is running with 50 students.

     Now the department is having one section. Rules of reservation are stipulated by the State Government is followed in admissions. The demand ratio for the seats is almost 1:1 .As the college is rural based and mostly inhabited by belong to the backward classes who depend upon the Government scholarships to continue their education.

Now the department has Two Lecturers.

INFRA STRUCTURE

          Three class rooms allotted for first, second and third B.Sc. students. One room is allotted for staff room. One laboratory is allotted for first, second and third B.Sc. students. One room is allotted for museum. Our department has been maintaining a very good Museum and Botanical Garden.

        The department of Botany is utilizing U.G.C. grants for purchasing practical apparatus including demonstrative equipment which is useful for better understanding of the students. Some of them are given below.

  5. Camera Lucida
  6. Model charts (plastic coated)
  7. Permanent slides

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DEPARTMENT:

  1. Experienced faculty with two Ph.D. holders since 2000.
  2. Maintains consistent academic result of 90%.
  3. Teaching of different chapters on the basis of University Syllabus.
  4. Framing of Academic Plans.
  5. Guest lectures by eminent lecturers.
  6. Analytical assignments for meritorious students.
  7. Teaching models and charts: Bio visual charts, slides, museum specimens, Innovative methods of teaching.
  8. Field trips (one day botanical trip) were conducted every year.
  9. Collection of the flora of the college campus.
  10. Encouraging the students to participate in student seminars.
  11. Maintain excellent Botanical Garden and Museum.
  12. Conducting of Unit Tests, Mid exams and Hope examinations.
  13. Student counseling after theory hours.
  14. Display of Charts and Permanent slides in practical’s.

DISTINCTIVENESS OF THE DEPARTMENT:

  1. Divide into textbook and chapter wise and keep in book format in the department library.
  2. Various newspaper cuttings are related to education and keep in book format in department library.

Enhancement of Teaching Skills

            Faculty members of Dept. improved their teaching skills by attending orientation courses, Refresher courses, Workshops, Seminars and Symposia.

Academic contribution of the Faculty

            Faculty Members of the Dept. academically contributed their efforts by publication of papers in various Journals, Books, Monographs and conducting of Class room seminars.

Linkages

        Biology Dept. has Linkage with Regional Agricultural Research Station Anakapalle, Recently Third B.Sc. students visited various Laboratories of RARS and acquire some knowledge and also visited Local Nursery.

 

ERSTWHILE STAFF MEMBERS

 

  1. Sri R. Appala Raju, founder of the department in 58-62 and worked as a principal in Government College, Nandyala, from 1970 to 1981 after leaving the department of botany, AMAL. College.

 

2. Sri K. Janaki Rao, had joined the department of Botany, AMAL. College in 1956. He worked as Head of the department of Botany from 1962 to 1991. He also worked as NCC officer as captain from 1963 to 1991. He attended five refresher courses in various Universities of India. He got stateBest Teacher award in 1988. He was the back bone of Botany and conducted more than 100 Botanical field trips for Degree students during his service.

 

3. Sri G.Prabhakar Rao, had joined the department as lecturer in 1964. He took charge as lecturer-in-charge from 1991 to 97. He also improved the department a lot during his service.

 

4. Sri D.Venkateswarulu, worked as a lecturer from 1964 to 1989. He also dedicated his service for the improvement of Botany departments.

 

5. Sri R.B.Sanjeeva Reddy, had joined the department of Botany in 1962. He worked as lecture-in-charge from 1997 to 1998.

 

6. Sri P.Satyanarayana Rao, worked as a lecturer from 1966-67.

 

7. Smt.P.Krishna Veni, has joined the department in 1970. She worked as a lecturer up to 1998. She worked as a lecturer-in-charge in 1998-2003. She attended four Refresher courses.

 

8. Smt.V.Aruna, has joined 1975 and worked as lecturer up to 2005. She attended four refresher courses and one orientation course.

 

9. Sri G.V.Seshaiah, had joined the department in 1992 as per transfer orders by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. He retired on 31st may 2006. He attended four refresher courses. He obtained M.Phil. Degree from S.V.University in 1983.

 

10. Dr. K.Ramesh, had joined the Dept. of Botany in 1972. He obtained Ph.D. in 1992entitled “Embyological Studies in Liliaceae, Amaryllidaceae and Bromeliaceae, published a Book related to EAMCET Botany. He attended one workshop and three refresher courses. Published two papers in Indian Journals. Presented 9 papers in Indian Science Congress and also attended one symposium at Andhra University. He retired on June 30, 2007. He worked as a lecturer-in-charge from 2003 to 2007.

 

11. Sri B.Eswara Rao, he had joined the Dept. in 1974. He was awarded participation certificate by District Collector during Janmaboomi Programme. He worked as N.S.S. officer, He attended four refresher courses. He conducted one Add on course on commercial Botany. He retired on June 30, 2007.

 

12. Sri S.Sankar Rao,he joined in Dept. of Botany as lecture in 1979. He obtained M.Phil. Entitled “AIR SPORA OF CERTAIN CROPS”. He worked as N.S.S. Programme Officer for two years. Conducted one work shop on Medicinal plants and their Applications on behalf of college Dept. of Botany. He completed five refresher courses and two orientation courses. Attended several symposia and seminars. He conducted Add on course on “importance of Medicinal Plants”. He worked as a lecturer-in-charge from 2007-2009. He retired on 2009.


 

13. Sri J.AppaRao, he joined the Dept. in 1985, He attended one orientation course and one Refresher course. He was appointed as coordinator for Bio-technology and Bio-Chemistry. He worked as a lecturer-in-charge from 2009 to July, 2010. He was died in service on July 2010.


 

14. Smt.K.Roseline Subhashini, she joined in the Dept. in 2005 as FIP substitute. She obtained M.Phil. from Andhra University entitled “ Induced Mutagenesis in Capsicum annuum”. She conducted one Add-on programme in Importance of Medicinal Plants. She worked in the Dept. up to March 2007.

 

15. Smt. A. Suchala Deviworked as a part time lecturer in the department of botany from 2007 to 2010. She also acquired B.Ed. degree in 2007.


 

16. Dr. G.Jaya Babu, he joined the Dept.in 2000. He obtained M.Phil. from Andhra university entitled WEED FLORA OF KHAMMAM DIST, A.P., INDIA and Ph.D. entitled Phytochemical Studies onthree taxa of Verbenaceae. Completed one orientation course and one refresher course. He Selected for National Overseas Scholarship in 1995 for higher studies in Abroad by the Govt. of India, Ministry for Human Resources and Welfare. Attended one National symposium and two Indian Pharmaceutical Congress meetings. He published 11 research papers both National and International Journals. Conducted one Add on Programme on Bio-Informatics. He worked as coordinator for Bio-technology and Bio-Chemistry in 2010. He worked as lecturer-in-charge from July 2010 to July 2017.He served as BOS member for Botany UG course to St. Josephs college for Women (Automonous), Visakhapatnam. He served as BOS member for Botany UG course Andhra University.  Now he is BOS Chairman for B.Voc.Agriculture, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. He is promoted as principal to our college from August, 2017 to till date.

 

17. Smt. P. Sussanna Deevena, she joined in the dept. in Aug 2017 in the place of Dr. G.Jaya Babu. She had B.Ed course.
